Trekking is a popular way to explore the mountains and forests in Laos. There are many well designed 1-3 day trekking trips available that usually invole an overnight stay in rural ethnic minority villages. If you are planning a trek, using a trained local guide is strongly recommended as trekking is still a relatively new activity in Laos. Resident guides have intimate knowledge of indigenous plants, animals and local culture, and hiring guides through a tour operator or guide service will make your trek more educational. If you want to visit a Lao National Protected Area booking a trek is one of the best ways to do it.

Luang Namtha

Ban Nalan Trek: The first official overnight trek in Laos. 2-day trip with traditional accommodation on the Nam Ha River.
Nam Ha Forest Camp (Nammat Trek): Challenging 2 or 3-day trek to Akha villages and a forest camp inside the Nam Ha NPA.
Piang Ngam Trek: Moderate full-day forest walk. May be extended to include a village home-stay in a Tai Daeng village if you would like an overnight experience in a traditional village.

Oudomxaymxai oudom xai

Treking in Oudomxay – Oudomxay Province is a fantastic place virtually untouched and unexplored by tourists with beautiful forests, ethnic Khmu and Hmong villages, rugged mountains, hot springs, caves and waterfalls. Oudomxay offers excellent one-day jaunts or 3-4 day journeys for those interested in getting away from the crowds and reaching places that few take the opportunity to discover.

Luang Prabang

Chomphet Trek (Phou Louang Tai): Overnight trek high into the hills across the Mekong overlooking Luang Prabang Town.

Vientiane Capital

Trekking in the Phou Khao Khouay NPA: Easy accessible trails just north of Vientiane with loads of wild orchids and the occasional wild elephant.

Houay Nhang Forest Reserve A nice getaway from the capital town of Vientiane, this forest reserve offers good day hikes and no crowds.

Khammouane

Phou Hin Poun 2-day Trek (Phalaem Trek): Overnight trek through varied landscapes in the Phou Hin Poun NPA that includes caves, natural springs, forest and an abandoned city.

Trekking in Attapeu: The remote province of Attapeu is located in the southeastern corner of Laos and has a range of unique self-guided and guided treks to waterfalls, national protected areas and ethnic villages.
