Location: a northern province between Luang Namtha, Phongsaly and
Luang Prabang Provinces
Natural Protected Areas: (no national protected area)
Main Ethnic Groups: Hmong, Akha, Khmu and others
Ecotourism Attractions: Oudomxai is normally bypassed by tourists en route to the
more popular tourist destinations of Luang Namtha in the north and Luang Prabang to
the south. However, the countryside of Oudomxai offers a very good sample of what
northern Laos has to offer-with virtually no tourists to be seen. Although Oudomxai
does not have a national protected area it does have some of the thickest forests in
northern Laos. The province is a good location for visiting Hmong and Khmu villages.
It is also known for its natural hot springs in Muang La and some spectacular waterfalls,
most of which are still untouched and undeveloped. A new one-day tour led by local
guides to the Nam Kat waterfall has recently been developed with German technical
assistance and can be booked at the provincial tourism office.
